Bormio in short

Bormio is a town in the upper Valtellina with a historic center, thermal baths and a ski area. In summer the Stelvio Pass road starts nearby. These are separate things, and it helps to keep them apart: the old town is for walking, the baths are for resting, and the lifts and the pass depend on the season.

You reach Bormio by bus or car, usually via Tirano, where the Trenord train from Milan ends and the Bernina railway begins. The sections below take the town one job at a time.

What to see and do in Bormio

Five things, each with its own season and rules.

The old town

The historic center is Piazza del Kuerc. The Kuerc was once a place of justice. Around the square stand the Torre Civica, also called Torre delle Ore, and the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio. Entry rules for individual museums and churches differ, so do not assume that everything is open every day.

The thermal baths

Bormio has two different bath operators: Bormio Terme and the QC baths of Bagni Vecchi and Bagni Nuovi. They have different prices, hours and rules.

Skiing

The winter area is planned from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 by the operator. That is a plan, not a snow guarantee.

The Stelvio Pass

The pass road is a seasonal summer road. The summer ski area on the pass is a separate operation with its own dates, and its season does not define when the road is open.

Looking back at the Olympics

Bormio was a venue of the 2026 Winter Olympics, for men's alpine skiing and ski mountaineering. Livigno hosted freestyle skiing and snowboarding. The Games are over, and this page offers no Olympic bookings.

How to get to Bormio

By train and bus from Milan, or by car from the Tirano side.

Train to Tirano, then bus

Trenord runs direct trains from Milano Centrale to Tirano in about 2 hours 30 minutes, normally every hour. From the Tirano station area, the Perego bus line A070 runs via Sondalo to Bormio. The winter timetables are valid from 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027. One sample run leaves Bormio at 8:50 a.m. and arrives in Tirano at 9:50 a.m. Other runs differ, and some run only on certain days.

Onward bus lines

Line A072 links Bormio with Livigno through Valdidentro. Line A073 links Bormio with Santa Caterina. The rail trip ends at Tirano, and buses cover the rest.

By car

The new 6.6 km bypass of Tirano on the SS38 was fully opened to traffic on 4 August 2026. Remaining works, including an emergency tunnel, are planned until December. Check road works before a long drive.

Where to stay and visitor tax

Bormio suits winter and bath trips best.

Stay in Bormio if you want the old town and the baths close by, or the winter ski area. Choose Tirano if the Bernina railway is the main plan, and Livigno if the ski area or the summer lifts there are the reason for the trip. These are profiles from the transport and the offer, not a hotel ranking.

Bormio charges a visitor tax per person and night. For hotels and residence-meublΓ¨ in 2026 it is €4 for five stars, €3 for four stars, €2.50 for three stars, €2 for two stars and €1.50 for one star. The rule applies to Bormio only, not to neighboring municipalities. See also the page on where to stay in Valtellina.
