Livigno at a glance

Livigno lies in a high valley at the northern edge of Valtellina, close to the Swiss border. There is no railway. You arrive by bus or car over mountain roads, which makes the trip a small journey of its own. The town works as a separate base for skiing in winter and for lifts, bike trails and the lake in summer.

This is an independent guide, not a site run by the town, the lift companies or the tourism office. Prices are in euros, as listed in 2026, and they change from season to season.

How to get to Livigno

Bus from Tirano and Bormio, or a mountain road from Switzerland.

From Italy

Take the train to Tirano, then the Perego bus line A070 to Bormio and line A072 on to Livigno. The 2026/27 fare table lists €6.20 for Tirano to Bormio and €6.20 for Bormio to Livigno. The winter timetable is valid from 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027, and each run applies only on certain days, so check the day you travel. See getting there for the full route from Milan.

From Switzerland

The Rhaetian Railway runs to Zernez. A Silvestri bus connects Zernez with Livigno. The Munt La Schera tunnel on this road is a toll tunnel with traffic lights and one lane at a time. Bicycles are not allowed through it.

By car

The Foscagno pass is the regular road in and normally open around the clock all year. The Forcola pass is a summer road only. The local portal showed both passes as of 14 September 2026, which says nothing about the day you drive. Winter equipment is advised from 15 October, on the Foscagno until 30 April.

The tunnel has announced special opening hours from 26 October to 7 November 2026: Monday 00:00–20:00, Tuesday to Friday 06:00–20:00, Saturday 06:00–24:00 and Sunday 00:00–24:00. A separate Saturday rule for winter is announced from 28 November 2026 to 17 April 2027. Check the current hours and the toll before you set out. Anyone driving a tall vehicle should note the 3.60 m limit. On the Italian side you pass through Bormio, and the Stelvio Pass makes a separate day trip.

Livigno duty-free: what it means

Livigno is described as a customs-free zone. Goods are sold without the usual taxes, and the allowances you may take out are limited and differ by the country you enter next. This is general information, not customs or tax advice. Rules and tables change, so check the current version before you shop.

The figures below come from the Italian side, the Swiss customs authority and Livigno's own goods table. Do not add mixed allowances together as if each were a full one. Alcohol and tobacco allowances do not apply under 17.

Livigno's own goods table lists some higher figures than the Swiss customs authority, for example 2 kg for butter and cream. For Switzerland, follow the Swiss figures. Above the value limit, import tax can apply under the border rules.

Lake Livigno and the summer lifts

The Lago di Livigno is a reservoir with steep slopes on both sides. The local portal lists kayak, stand-up paddle and pedal-boat rentals. That does not mean swimming is allowed or that rentals run in every month, so follow the signs at the shore and ask the rental booth.

The summer lifts have fixed seasons. The Carosello runs from 20 June to 13 September 2026 and the Sitas lift from 1 July to 31 August 2026. The Mottolino bike park is open from 13 June to 27 September 2026. These are the 2026 dates. The 2027 dates will be announced later.

Skiing in Livigno

The local tourism organization gives 115 km of pistes for Livigno in total. Do not count that number again per side of the valley. Day tickets for 2026/27 depend on the period:

  • Special (28 November to 18 December 2026 and 10 April to 2 May 2027): adult €51.50, junior €25.50, youth or senior €44.
  • Season (19 to 25 December 2026, 9 to 29 January 2027, 30 March to 9 April 2027): adult €66, junior €33, youth or senior €56.50.
  • High (26 December 2026 to 8 January 2027, 30 January to 29 March 2027): adult €74.50, junior €37, youth or senior €63.

A six-day adult pass costs €258.50, €331 or €374.50 in the three periods. The "Skipass Free" offer is tied to a stay of at least 4 ski days with 5 hotel nights, or 6 ski days with 7 apartment nights. It is not free lifts for everyone, and its end date is listed as 18 or 19 December 2026, depending on the page. More on the other areas on the skiing page.
