Valtellina Weather

Valtellina has no single climate. Bormio, Livigno, Sondrio and the high passes sit at different heights, so the best time depends on what you want to do. This guide ties the seasons to published dates.

Weather in Valtellina in short

Valtellina is a long valley with towns and passes at very different heights. Livigno, Bormio and Sondrio are not one weather location, and a forecast for one does not describe the others. The Stelvio Pass lies at 2,758 m, far above the valley towns.

The best time to visit is therefore tied to activities, not to a single month. Skiing follows the lift dates announced by the operators. Hiking, cycling and the high passes follow the summer season. Lift dates are plans, not snow guarantees, and the weather can change them.

Livigno weather and Bormio weather

Two mountain towns, two different places.

Do not read one town's weather as the other's. Measurements from the regional weather agency ARPA show the range. During the Olympic period, 6 to 22 February 2026, about 35 cm of new snow fell in Livigno at 1,850 m and about 30 cm on the Bormio-Stelvio piste at 2,000 m. New snow is not the same as snow depth, and it does not tell you how safe the snow is.

Valley and mountain temperatures differ a lot, and a warm or cold spell in one place says little about another. Sondrio in the valley is not Livigno. For temperatures on your travel dates, check a current forecast for the exact town and the height you will be at.

Summer in the valley and on the lifts

Heat is part of the picture too.

Summer 2026 was hot

ARPA rates the Lombardy summer of 2026 as the warmest since 1951, 3.1 °C above 1991 to 2020 across five reference stations that include Sondrio. That is a regional figure, so do not apply it to Livigno.

Summer lifts in Livigno

The Carosello lifts run from 20 June to 13 September 2026. A foot passenger return ticket costs €21 for adults, €14.50 for juniors and €19 for seniors. From 8 to 23 August 2026 it costs €23, €16 and €21. A Carosello bike pass costs €40 for a day, €28 for juniors and €36 for seniors. Children up to 5 are free, and junior age limits differ by product.

Hiking and cycling

Plan hikes and rides in the summer lift and pass season, and keep a plan B for a day with cloud or rain. The weather can turn faster at height than in the valley.

Valtellina weather: frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Valtellina?

It depends on the activity. Winter suits skiing, with the Bormio season planned for 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. Summer suits hiking, cycling and the high passes, with Livigno's Carosello lifts running from 20 June to 13 September 2026.

Is the weather the same in Bormio and Livigno?

No. They are two mountain towns at different heights, and ARPA measures snow at different heights too. Check a forecast for the town you are visiting.

Can I count on snow in winter?

No. Operators publish planned dates, not snow guarantees. The winter of 2025/26 was the third warmest since 1991 in Lombardy, according to ARPA.

Is summer skiing guaranteed on the Stelvio?

No. A season was announced for 30 May to 1 November 2026, but summer skiing depends on snow and safety and can pause in hot weather.

Are the Stelvio and Gavia passes open in autumn?

Both are seasonal. The Gavia is closed in winter, and the Stelvio is a summer road. Check the current road status before you set out.
