How Valtellina tours differ
The Bernina Express and the regional train run on the same Bernina line, so a day trip from Tirano can be organized by yourself. A train ticket is not a guided tour with hotel pickup. That is the main difference between the options below: some are products you book with a guide, others are tickets you combine on your own.
The figures in the table come from the railway and the bus operator. They show what one product costs, not a market range. Fares from the Rhaetian Railway apply from 13 December 2026, the start of the 2027 timetable year, and they can change. Bookable guided tours have prices that depend on the date, so you find them in the live list further down.

The off-season for the supplement runs from 13 December 2026 to 23 April 2027, and the peak season from 24 April to 3 October 2027. The supplement depends on the train number, not on the shorter section you book. Fares before 13 December 2026 are published separately by the railway, so check them if you travel earlier.

The options in detail
What each one involves.
Self-organized Bernina day trip
You take the regional train from Tirano and buy the ticket yourself. Children under 6 travel free without a ticket, and children from 6 to under 16 pay half fare, with the full reservation supplement for everyone. Interrail with validity for Switzerland covers the whole route including Tirano, but panoramic and bus reservations are separate.
Tickets and reservations โPanoramic Bernina Express
The panoramic cars have windows that reach into the roof, a reserved seat and onboard service. You cannot pick the side or the direction of your seat in advance, because cars can be coupled at either end of the train.
Bernina Express guide โWorks on the Chur side, autumn 2026
From 29 October to 13 November 2026 the railway announced a diversion of trains 951 and 952 via Landquart, Klosters and the Vereina tunnel. In that period the normal Albula and Landwasser route is not used. It is an announcement, so check it again before you travel.
Winery visits
One producer, Arpepe, lists visits and tastings by appointment only. Plan to book ahead. Price, language and group size are for you to ask when you make the appointment.
Wine guide โGuided walks in Tirano
In summer 2025 the town offered free guided walks: 1 hour at the basilica and 1.5 hours along the old town walls and the Castellaccio. Do not plan around this for 2026 without checking.
Tirano guide โValtellina by bus
Perego winter timetables for 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027 cover Tirano to Bormio (line A070), Bormio to Livigno (A072) and Bormio to Santa Caterina (A073). Courses differ by day of operation, so check the one for your day.
Getting there โWhat to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices do.
What is in the price
A tour may include the rail ticket, the seat reservation, a guide or an entry fee, or none of them. Compare these points first, then the price.
Date and timetable year
The Bernina winter timetable runs from 26 October to 12 December 2026, and a new timetable with new fares starts on 13 December 2026. Make sure the date you book falls in the right period.
Meeting point and pickup
Check where the tour starts and whether hotel pickup is included. A rail ticket never includes it. Public pages do not show free seats on your day.
Cancellation terms
Terms differ by operator and cannot be carried over from one product to another. Read them before you pay.

Valtellina tours: frequently asked questions
Do I need a tour to ride the Bernina train?
No. The regional train needs only a valid ticket, and a seat reservation is optional at CHF 5 per person and direction. A tour mainly adds a guide, transport to the start and a planned day.
What is the difference between the panoramic train and the regional train?
The panoramic cars have windows into the roof, a reserved seat and onboard service, and they require a paid reservation. Regional cars more often have regular windows and no compulsory reservation. Both use the same Bernina line.
How much does a Valtellina tour cost?
That depends on the product and the date. The table shows railway and bus fares from 13 December 2026, from โฌ6.20 for the bus to Bormio to CHF 118 for the first-class ticket to Chur. Prices of bookable guided tours are in the live list on this page.
Can I visit a winery without booking?
Do not count on it. The producer named on this page lists visits and tastings by appointment only.
Are tours from Milan to Valtellina possible?
Trenord runs from Milano Centrale directly to Tirano in about 2 hours 30 minutes, so a trip from Milan is possible on your own. For guided departures, check the live list for the dates you want.
